Retainers
Invisalign retainers that hold your straight teeth, outlast standard clear trays, and double as whitening trays, at our Fremont, Cupertino, and Milpitas offices.
Teeth drift. Retainers stop it.
Teeth never permanently stay where braces or aligners put them. The ligaments holding each tooth have memory, and without something holding the new position, teeth start moving back within months. The American Dental Association treats retention as part of orthodontic treatment, not an optional extra. Wear tapers off over time, but some retainer wear is for life.
We fit Invisalign retainers
Agape fits Invisalign retainers rather than generic clear trays. They are made from the same digital scan as your treatment on Invisalign's own material, which the company reports is around 30% more durable and lasts about 30% longer than standard clear retainers. In practice that means fewer cracks, less clouding, and a set that keeps its fit for years instead of months.
- Scanned, not impressed. No goop; the scan takes minutes and can be reused for replacements.
- Sets of up to four. Order spares from the same scan so a lost tray never leaves you without one.
- Fitted the day treatment ends, whether you finished with braces or aligners, at Agape or elsewhere.
- A bonded wire behind the lower front teeth can be added when crowding is likely to return there.
Whiten with your retainer
The end of orthodontic treatment is when most people want whiter teeth, and Invisalign retainers double as whitening trays. They fit closely enough to hold our professional whitening gel exactly where it should sit, so you can brighten your teeth at night while the retainer does its job. Ask at your fitting and we will add the gel to your kit. See our teeth whitening page for how it works.
How much to wear it
- First few months: all day and night, out only to eat and brush.
- Rest of the first year: every night.
- After that: most nights, for good. Your orthodontist sets the exact schedule for your case.
Daily care
- Water only while it is in. Hot drinks warp it; anything sugary or acidic sits against your teeth under the tray.
- Rinse it when it comes out and brush it gently with a soft brush and no toothpaste, which scratches the plastic.
- Case, not napkin. Retainers wrapped in a napkin get thrown away.
- Keep it away from heat and away from pets.
- Bring it to every cleaning so we can check the fit and clean it properly.
Lost, cracked, or tight
Lost or cracked: call us the same day. If your scan is on file we can order a replacement without a new appointment; if not, a quick scan does it. Even a few weeks without retention can let teeth shift visibly. Tight: if it has been a while and the retainer feels snug, wear it and it will usually settle in a few nights. If it will not seat fully or pressure is painful, do not force it; book a fit check and we will tell you whether a new retainer or a short course of aligners is the fix.
Wisdom teeth can undo the result
A retainer cannot fight erupting wisdom teeth. For teens and young adults who have just finished treatment, wisdom teeth pushing forward are one of the most common causes of lower front teeth crowding again. We handle wisdom teeth removal in house, and the right time to talk about it is at your final orthodontic visit.
Retainers, answered
How much do retainers cost?
If retainers were part of your orthodontic treatment at Agape, the first set is included. Replacement and spare sets are priced per set, and ordering spares from the same scan is the economical way to keep a backup. We give you the price before ordering.
I finished treatment somewhere else. Can you make me a retainer?
Yes. A quick scan is all we need. Book a retainer visit at any of our three offices.
What is different about an Invisalign retainer?
It is made on Invisalign's own material from a digital scan. Invisalign reports the material is around 30% more durable and lasts about 30% longer than standard clear retainers, and the trays can be used with whitening gel.
Can I whiten my teeth with it?
Yes. The fit is close enough to hold professional whitening gel in place overnight. Ask us for the gel at your fitting or any visit, and see our whitening page for details.
How long does a retainer last?
Longer than a standard clear tray, and years with good care. Cracks, clouding, or a fit that has loosened are the signs it is time for a new one.
Do I really have to wear it forever?
In some form, yes. Teeth keep moving throughout life. The schedule drops to most nights after the first year, but it never stops entirely. Patients who quit in their twenties often see visible shifting later.
Does insurance cover replacements?
Some plans include limited retainer coverage under the orthodontic benefit and many do not. We check your plan and tell you the cost before ordering.
