Smile Makeover Overview
A smile makeover is a treatment plan that combines two or more cosmetic procedures to fix several things at once. No two are alike. Which treatments, in what order, over how long, all depend on what you are starting with and what you want to end up with.
What separates a makeover from a single treatment is the planning. Color, shape, proportion, and gum line all have to be considered together, because a veneer placed before whitening, or bonding placed before straightening, gives a result that is visible and hard to fix. Treatment Options
Whitening is nearly always the first step, because every new restoration is matched to the shade you end up with. Bonding handles a single chip, a small gap, or a worn edge in one visit. Porcelain veneers are the big lever, changing color, shape, and spacing across several front teeth at once. A crown covers a tooth that is too worn or damaged for a veneer. And when teeth are crowded or out of line, clear aligners or braces with Dr. Luke Wu come first, so that any veneers or bonding afterward can be smaller and more conservative.
Most makeovers use two or three of these. Some use only whitening and a little bonding. We recommend the least treatment that gets you the result you want.
Treatment Sequence
Cosmetic work has a clinical sequence, and doing it out of order is expensive to undo. Health comes first: any decay or gum problems are treated before cosmetic work starts, because cosmetics on an unhealthy foundation do not last. Orthodontics, if it is needed, comes next, so teeth are in the right place before anything is built on them. Then whitening, so the target shade is fixed. Then the restorations, veneers, crowns, and bonding, matched to that shade and to each other.
The plan we give you spells this order out, with a realistic timeline. Simple makeovers finish in a few visits over a few weeks. Plans that include orthodontics or several veneers run months, and we tell you that up front.
Your Consultation
A makeover consultation is longer than a routine exam. We talk about what you want to change and what you want to keep, take photos and X-rays and usually a digital scan, go through the options, and give you a written plan with the sequence, the timeline, and an itemized cost before anything is scheduled. Nothing permanent happens until you have approved the whole plan.
The most useful thing you can bring is a photo of a smile you like. It tells us more than any description, and it does not need to be realistic; working out what is realistic is what the consultation is for.
Phased Treatment
You do not have to do everything at once. Many patients spread a makeover over a year or two for budget reasons, and that works well as long as the full plan is designed first. Each stage then stands on its own and sets up the next one, with no redone work and no mismatched shades. Cosmetic work is generally not covered by dental plans, but restorative pieces within a makeover, such as a crown on a damaged tooth, often are. We check your plan and tell you which parts are likely to qualify before you decide.

How much does a smile makeover cost?
It depends entirely on what goes into it. Whitening and a little bonding is a modest investment; a full set of veneers is a significant one. You get a complete itemized estimate at your consultation, and nothing is scheduled until you have approved the plan and the total.
How long does it take?
Whitening plus bonding can be done in two or three visits over a few weeks. Plans with veneers, crowns, or orthodontics take months. We give you a realistic timeline before you start.
Do I have to do it all at once?
No. Many patients phase a makeover over a year or two. We design the whole plan first so each stage makes sense on its own and sets up the next one.
Will it look natural?
That is the goal. We aim for the best version of your own smile: proportions that fit your face, shades in a believable range, and no changes to things that do not need changing.
Do I need orthodontics before veneers?
Not always, but often it gives a better result. Straight teeth need less enamel removed for veneers and the final proportions look more natural. For mild crowding, veneers alone can create the look of alignment. We tell you which path makes sense for your case.
Does insurance cover any of it?
Cosmetic treatments such as whitening, veneers, and bonding for appearance are generally not covered. Restorative work inside a makeover, such as a crown on a damaged tooth, often is, at least in part. We check your plan and identify what is likely to qualify before treatment.
